Creating a provider-forward technology experience

We had a chat with Fel (CEO at Tia), Reshma (CEO at Medplum) and JB (Head of Engineering at Awell) about why a composable, API-first architecture is essential for thriving in 2024.

Here is what we learned:

  1. “Rip and replace” EHR transitions is going the way of the dinosaur. We all know how terrifying it is to flip the switch on an entire EHR system overnight. But with a composable architecture, you can make the transition gradually, swapping out components one at a time. This makes the process smoother and less risky.
  2. Stay agile for the next black swan event. Take COVID for example, suddenly care organizations were forced to roll out telemedicine in weeks - a near-impossible task with a monolithic system. But with a composable architecture it's like building with Lego blocks—you can swap out parts as needed, ensuring your system can handle whatever comes next.
  3. Composability lets you innovate without risk. Tia, for example, has a subgroup of clinicians who are “tech testers”. They try out new features before a full rollout. This means they can experiment, gather feedback, and make adjustments without the risk of disrupting the entire system.
  4. When Tia started, they had a strong “build everything” mindset. Back then, there weren’t as many tools available, and they underestimated the complexity of healthcare. But as they delved deeper into healthcare, it became clear how complex everything is and that you can’t - and shouldn’t - try to build every component yourself. Now, they focus on leveraging the best solutions available, allowing them to concentrate on building what truly sets them apart.
  5. Tia’s goal has always been to create a provider-first technology experience, driven by the belief that happy providers lead to happy patients. Early on, it was challenging to convince others that technology should drive operational workflows, not the other way around. Now, with tools like Awell and the CareOps mindset gaining traction, it’s clear that building systems that truly enhance provider workflows is the key to success.

PS: Fel said that combining Medplum and Awell is like buying a cooler and then putting beers in it— aka you're turning your tech stack into a party. If you're curious to see how Awell and Medplum work together, check out a quick demo or hit reply to learn more.
